who's up for a print exchange?
Over the weekend, I had a great letterpress workshop with Casey and Pam (hello!). Both are quite familiar with the intricacies of print, one being in the print industry and the other a printmaker. At the end of the workshop I took out a vintage block that I bought from an antique market a couple years ago and realized that I hadn't tried it out on the Showcard yet. I never would've tried to print with it on the platen because the size of the printable area is much too large (4.5 x 6").
Thanks to Casey who shared some of his bright white cardstock with me, I pulled off some nice prints with straight black ink from the Showcard. The prints aren't perfect, but I'm still impressed by the ink coverage and transfer.
How fantastic is this ad for the Smith Corona cashier? I love the different fonts, the images, the coupon, the one bullet point and "A keyboard to fit your business".
Would anyone be up for a print exchange? Let's get a little snail mail going! I'd love to see your work in person. I've got three of these prints (10x7") to trade with those who are interested who also print (using woodcut, litho, linocut, silkscreen, letterpress, gocco, etching, drypoint, intaglio, rubber stamps etc.). It'll be a random draw that closes this Friday with three print exchange partners. Let me know in the comments below (or send me an email at snapandtumble[at]gmail.com) with the following info: 1. who you are 2. what city you're in 3. what you print with 4. what you'll trade and 5. your email address. Hope to see you in the mail soon!
PS. I'm in Toronto, Ontario Canada and this is open to international participants!

UPPERCASE magazine Issue 8
Hooray! Uppercase Magazine issue #8 is now available and stacked with beautiful photos, articles and interviews. I've had my copy for about a week now and am just waiting for a quiet moment to take in all of the great stuff that's included in this issue (see Charlotte Rivers' abcedery page for instance).
For my sample, I created 100 postcard-size prints in 3 colours and tucked them inside 100 editioned and printed kraft paper bags. I handset metal and wood type for this project. The postcards were printed on the tabletop Chandler & Price while the paper bags went through the Showcard mini. In addition to the 100 prints, I included 10 7x7 prints for the giveaway that Uppercase will be having for it's subscribers. The 7x7 print was run through the press three times - one for each line, since my Showcard bed wasn't big enough to fit it all.
It was great printing and pulling these samples together. Have a look and marvel at all of the other samples that were included from across the globe!
To get your hands on a copy of issue #8, check out the stockist list.

postcard giveaway: give-it-forward
Hi folks. Finding snail mail in my letterbox never fails to make me smile. Handwritten letters, postcards from far-away, or packets with a little surprise makes it even better. So, in conjunction with the Letterpress Postcards + Notecards Workshop, today we're going to give-it-forward! For this postcard giveaway all you need to do is let me know who you'd like to give this set of 5 letterpress printed postcards to. Leave your comment (single entries only, please) below and I'll pick a winner at random on Sunday July 4th. I'll notify the winner (make sure I've got your email address) and ask for the mailing address of their lucky recipient. Then, I'll giftwrap and send the postcards on the winner's behalf. Go for it, make someone's day :)
UPDATE as of Sunday July 4th: the winner is Paper Pastries! Thank you to those who entered the giveaway. I wish that I could give everyone else who commented on the giveaway something...and so I will! :) If you'd like a postcard send me your mailing address and I'll be sure to post one in the mail for you.

letter love fridays + a token of thanks

How did it get to end of the year so quickly? The last six months have been a roller coaster ride of fortunate and timely events. Having been laid off from my job in the summer to switching gears in the fall and offering the first of the Letterpress Curiosity Workshops, I've seen a growing number of people in support of my small printery. As a token of thanks, I've collected a bundle of my letterpress printed cards (17 of them!) and extra special goods to giveaway to a lucky reader!
All you've got to do in the comments area is share one great thing that's happened to you in the past year. Be it an adventure, a memorable meal, a gesture of kindness, or getting a handwritten letter in the mail, anything goes! A comment (with a valid email address) will be chosen at random on Friday December 25 at 8am EST. Good luck and have a handmade weekend :)
NB: Thank you to those who have already entered comments - there are a couple of you who haven't made your email address available to me (you may send it to me at snapandtumble@gmail.com if you'd like) and I'd hate to not be able to include you in the draw because of it. So remember to give me your email address - it'll be the only way for me to contact you if you've won! :)

thank you {soft grey + pale yellow}

snap & tumble is going to one of 20 Etsy sellers to be featured at the January 2010 The Wedding Show put on by the good people of The Wedding Co. In it's ninth year, the show has added The Handmade Stand which is dedicated to handmade goods that are all things wedding-related. After the show, the handmade items will be given away to The Wedding Company blog readers.
There's a definite movement towards including specialty handmade wares in weddings, and I am all for encouraging and supporting that idea. Kudos to The Wedding Co. team and Catherine Lash for sharing and embracing the handmade!

And speaking of which, it'll be shipped free as well. Thank you to everyone who jumped in and shared their own fun five favorites. I'll be offering the Favorites prints in the shop, all you have to do is give me your 5 favorites and the order should be complete in about one week.

giveaway {playing favorites}

The other day I was thinking about some of my favorite things. Polaroids, letterpress, typewriters, stamps and fabrics are just a few. I took out my metal fonts and thought, how nice would it be to see the words printed in one place - a little bit of me in a few (dozen or so words)? I narrowed them down to five, randomly arranged them and printed away. Then I thought, everyone should have a letterpress print of the things they love!
Starting in October, I'll be offering "A Few of My Favorite Things" on 8.5x11" cotton paper, but of course, they'd be a few of your favorite things. To kick things off, I think a giveaway is in order!
If you'd like a chance to win your own print just comment below with 5 of your favorite things. Whatever you list has to be a single word or name. For example, it can't be 'leg warmers' or 'Grandma Mary'. The winner's 5 words/names will be printed on Crane's Lettra stock and shipped free. The winner will be chosen at random and notified by email (so please make sure to include a valid email address in the comment form). Closing date will be September 30th '09 11:59pm EST and winner will be announced on October 1st '09.
good luck, everyone!
