party favour bags for Evan

Remember these guys? They were the goodies inside of the party favour bags I printed for my nephew's sixth birthday party. Evan's a collector of sorts and Gogo's are his latest thing. His party was held at the dojo where he takes karate lessons. He was joined by 17 of his friends, on the mats, kicking high and playing games. Evan even got to cut his birthday cake with a sword - good times.

the loot bags have landed

Yay! The loot bags are finally making their destinations. Thank you to those who have emailed, sent messages or blogged about their letterpress loot. Rike, Amanda  and Janice posted some really great shots of their letterpress stationery.

One of the loot bags went to Peter of Ruk.ca. Check out the post about his son using the Adana to print Valentine's cards. Really, really cute how Oliver hangs off the press in the video!

letterpress loot bags in the mail

The letterpress loot bags are bundled, addressed and ready for the mail this morning. I added a last minute goodie to each of the orders - a set of two personalized flatcards blind printed my favorite wood type. These were so much fun to put together. Thanks again to those who picked up a bag, you should be receiving yours (depending on where you're located) in 6-15 days.

loot bag count down

A warm thank you to those who picked themselves up a Letterpress Loot Bag from the pop-up shop yesterday. And hugs to those who shared and passed on the shop link, tweeted, blogged and sent messages. Some of you have asked if this will be the only time I make the loot bags, and the answer is no. But it won't be for another while so this is it for now.

I'm glad to see all of the loot bags off to good homes.

UPDATE: 7:57PM Loot Bags sold out!

bright hearts

A little hit of neon pink in the post is just enough to warm up the cold, grey wintery days here.

PS. Working on letterpress loot bags...more news to come!

Is it fair to say that my website is homemade? It was developed by my husband Chris, so actually, it was definitely made very close to home. One of the best things about having my own site and learning a tid-bit here and there, is that I can change up the copy and photos in the gallery all by myself. It's really just a matter of cut and paste and I leave the code well enough alone. It's a good feeling to have full control over my own "window display" of sorts and the ability to change it up whenever I like. I hope to update the website on a bi-weekly basis to keep it fresh.

monthly subscription update

You guys are so good about keeping me on my toes about the letterpress subscription. With all of the custom work and the new press moving in, I haven't set aside the time to focus on the monthly subscription. But now that things have slowed down, I'm able to give you an update.

The subscription has gone through so many transformation behind the scenes. It started off as lootbags but with your comments and my own personal preference it became clear that most wanted to know exactly what they were purchasing. Fair enough.

The second idea that took off was based on much feedback from people who buy letterpress cards with the intent of giving it to someone. But they never actually do and end up keeping the card for themselves because they liked it so much. I'm guilty of doing the very same thing. So to address this, I was going to include one card and one art print based on the same design each month. The card would go to the intended recipient and the art print would be yours to keep. All systems go with a name, a wordmark and I even started the designs. I sat with it for a month or two, and wondered if customers might prefer to have something that could double as a card and an art print.

Finally, I decided that the letterpress subscription will consist of useful, correspondence cards featuring limited edition designs. I'm happy to announce that this collection is called The Card Catalogue. The only thing up in the air now is whether it will be two cards a month, or one card and one postcard.

Thanks for your patience everyone.

Here's a small update (and then some) to the making it simpler post. To summarize, I wanted to pare things down but felt some anxiety about actually doing it. I had too many projects on the go, products in the shop, and half-realized ideas. Since that post and the accompanying comments, I've never felt better about my decision to simplify things. It suddenly became easy to channel my energy.

I've never felt better about my decision to simplify things.

As a result, I've chosen to work solely on two items. One, you may already know about - the monthly letterpress subscription. It's going in a different direction than what I planned and am excited about seeing it take on a new shape. I really can't wait to get to the printing. But the finer details of the subscription need to be defined first.

It's a terrible feeling to come up with an idea...only to see it retrofitted a couple days later in someone else's hands.

As for the second idea, I'm keeping on the down low. Sharing information and ideas with others is supposed to be a good thing. But because this blog isn't private, I'm no stranger to being poached from. I'm sure I'm not alone in this. It's a terrible feeling when you've come up with an idea, share it, go through the pains of working out the kinks, sitting through the gestation period and putting your heart into it, only to see it retrofitted a couple days later in someone else's hands. Worse over when it's a repeat offender. That said, I'm sadly and reluctantly keeping a little bit to myself. For now ;)

Last week I asked for reader comments and votes on whether or not the Letterpress Loot Bag would be something they'd enjoy subscribing to. One of the comments received seemed a little mean-spirited. I decided to publish it anyway because I did, afterall, ask for feedback.

Here's the advice the anonymous person gave to me:
"Lots of other printers are already doing this. Maybe you should try coming up with something original instead."
I responded and thanked the person for their time. In addition to my response I'd like to share this timely post about competition on Seth Godin's blog.
"There are lots of good reasons to abandon a project. Having a little competition is not one of them. "
booya!
