in the works

Sewing was the last thing I thought I'd ever want to learn. But flipping through some crafty books I got over the holidays, the urge to sew crept up on me. Next thing you know I'm in The Workroom, a Parkdale gem that lets you sew by the hour and is host to a bunch of great sewing classes. Karyn, the owner, has done a nice job with the store-front like space lining one wall with gorgeous fabrics and a variety of sewing machines on the other. She's set it up so that all you want to do is get right down to making something!

And indeed I did. The Sewing Essentials class was perfect for me, the beginner. I came out of the 3 hour workshop confident in sewing a straight line, knowing how to thread a bobbin and an envelope pillow case to prove it. Small steps, people!
But as usual, when I get onto something I'm like a dog with it's favorite chew toy. The next day, I bought a sewing machine. I already have a small collection of fabrics I've picked up over the last few months (y'know, just in case).

What does this have to do with letterpress, you wonder. I do too. But learning a new skill never hurts and maybe one day, I'll add to the cards by way of fabric packaging. I'm a sucker for presentation. We'll see what happens.

Oh, sewing!
What a fun, winter-y hobby!
Are you going to the trunk show at The Workroom in February?

I'm dying to take a class with Karyn! Like you, I'm a complete newbie. I have grand ambitions of making Built by Wendy patterns, but for now, I'd settle for a cushion cover!

Hi Jaime - if I'm not printing that weekend, I'll try to make the trek down. Looks like it's going to be really sweet!

Hi Jane - do not wait to take a class! A whole new world is right inside the workroom!
